Expiration of Stage 2 Water Conservation Alert

10/1/2024 7:43:22 AM

Greetings, neighbors.

The Stage 2 Water Conservation Alert expired September 30, 2024. You may adjust irrigation systems to a normal 3-day per week irrigation schedule: Even numbered property addresses shall limit irrigation to Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays; odd numbered property addresses shall limit irrigation to Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Irrigating in late evening and early morning hours are the most effective times for supplemental irrigation.

Irrigation should only be used to supplement weekly rainfall; and southern turf-grasses only require 1” of water per week. Nerdy facts: Based on 6 years of precipitation data for this area from April to September, as a 7-day rolling average the 50th percentile of weekly rainfall is 0.92” per week; the 42nd percentile is 2/3” per week. Adjusting your irrigation system to apply about 1/3” of irrigation water per week, or a tenth of an inch of water per irrigation day will 1) be sufficient to supplement weekly rainfall, 2) prevent over-watering, and 3) reduce irrigation usage and tiered-rate fees. By setting a weekly target to 1/3” of water as supplemental irrigation, a typical residential lot will use 1,150 gallons per week - less 5,000 gallons per month.

Consider installing an automatic irrigation controller. A quick browser search will provide a host of EPA WaterSense-certified smart controllers. Smart sprinkler controllers are great because they control when and how much water goes onto your yard. It should be controllable through an app for Android and iOS and provide configurable options for smart watering schedules based on landscaping, vegetation, and the weather forecast. It should also have a backup option for when the internet goes down, offer some smart-home integration by way of a hub or a digital assistant, and be well-built so that it can live outside the house.
